Date & Time:Wednesday October 15, 2014 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM
Location:The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, 2121 Allston Way, Berkeley
The Magnes is proud to continue its series of pop-up lunchtime exhibitions with a feature presentation by Andrea Sinn, who is the Visiting Professor in the History Department at UC Berkeley. Professor Sinn is an expert on German, Jewish and migrations history. She was a fellow of the German National Merit Foundation and is the author of "Und ich lebe wieder an der Isar: Exil und Rückkehr des Münchner Juden Hans Lamm" (The Exile and Return of the Munich Jew, Hans Lamm), published in 2008. Her most recent monograph appeared in 2013: Jewish Politics and Press in the Federal Republic of Germany [in German].
This week we will focus on questions of exile and emigration in 20th century Germany, traceable in many of the Magnes Family Collections. Within the perspective of Jewish history and literature of 20th century Germany we encounter a vast array of different and diverse migration movements that will be not only the focus of this talk, but also the topic of a seminar to be taught by Andrea Sinn in the Department of German in the coming spring semester. How Magnes sources can be used in this context will be another aspect of this Popup exhibition that will introduce one of the Family collections in detail.
About the PopUp Exhibition Series
Each week, UC Berkeley faculty and students, visiting artists and other notable guests present brief lectures focused on selected treasures from the The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life. One speaker and one object at the time, these “flash” exhibitions include the opportunity to view the art and artifacts discussed intimately and up close.
Bring your own lunch, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and take part in an exciting learning program, free and open to the public. Close-up view of collections included.
