Memory Lab is an interactive space devoted to the creation of digital albums about family and community history. Using professional equipment, the Magnes enables visitors to create and process digital images, as well as audio and video files.
In Memory Lab, visitors will create digital albums based on their personal histories. At the same time, the digital albums will be added to the resources of the Magnes, and promote further research and a broader understanding of Jewish culture.
Some of the projects created in the Memory Lab can be viewed following the links below. To view all of the Memory Lab projects on Flickr, the collection may be found here.

In Safri's Home: Professor Gerald Berreman's Photo-Diary from India (1957-1972)
For some 40 years Professor Gerald (Gerry) Berreman of UC Berkeley pursued a longitudinal study of social inequality (caste, gender, class) and environment in their historical context in a Garhwal village (Sirkanda) and its region. Prof. Berreman participated in the Magnes Memory Lab project by bringing his own photographs taken in India, and providing commentaries to each of them, outlining the characters portrayed and their stories.

What's in a Name? Hilary Stein Osofsky's Journey into Family History
My name is Hilary Stein Osofsky. My own Yiddish name is Hinda Mary – Mary Hinda was my namesake. Although I was named after Mary Hinda Gans, my grandaunt, my given name goes back in the family to at least 1798, to my great-great-great-grandmother, Hinda. Through images and memories, I want to make it possible for my daughter and son's children to trace their heritage to their great-great-great-great-great-grandparents - six generations back, to Jewish life in Eastern Europe.
